Racer Communication – Homeplace Ramble

It’s almost race time! This communication will help get you ready….

Here’s what we’ve decided to share with you. You’ll receive a bit more information on race morning! We’ll email you if there are any significant updates, otherwise just check back here prior to race weekend and make sure to share this with your teammates.

LAST UPDATED: MARCH 3

STEP 1: Read through this communication

STEP 2: Show up, find a few CPs, have fun

Schedule

— Saturday, March 8 —
Check-in  —  7:00am – 7:45am
Race Start —  8:00am (all distances)
Race Cutoff —  4HR – noon  |  12HR – 8:00pm

START/FINISH
∇ Paintsville Lake State Park, Marina, Shelter #3 (next to boat ramp)
Address: 1581 Kentucky Rte 2275, Staffordsville, KY 41256
Map Location: LINK

We’ve made check-in super simple.

  • You can check-in at the S/F starting at 7:00am Saturday morning.
  • Before showing up, find your BIB# by checking out this TEAM ROSTER.
  • We’ll have your team’s check-in bag arranged numerically. Just find your BIB#, unpack the contents, and digest the information. No need to officially “check-in” with us. Read the Race Instructions carefully – they’ll tell you what’s up.

MAPS: Each team/solo will receive one set of course materials (maps, passport, instructions, clue sheet). All of these will be on waterproof paper, but if it’s going to rain we’d still recommend a map case or giant ziplock.

The maps are pre-plotted, meaning the checkpoint locations are already plotted on the map for you.

BIBS: Each team/solo will receive one BIB#. Attach it to any teammate, doesn’t matter where, just make sure it’s visible. We’ll provide safety pins.

SOUP BEANS & CORNBREAD:
o Ma will have you a hot, home-cooked, country meal ready at the FINISH.

MANDATORY GEAR: Have everything on the Mandatory Gear list. We usually do a gear check of some sorts.

WATER: There’s no official water-stations as part of this course. However, there’s numerous options to treat. Creeks were flowing well during course setting.

APPLICABLE TO 12HR ONLY

BOATS:
o If you’re using YOUR OWN Boat and/or Paddle Gear: Stage them in the designated area at the S/F.  This will be a mini-Transition Area, so stage whatever you’d like here. You’ll pick up your boats & paddle gear after the race by 9PM.
o If you’re using RENTALS: It will already be staged for you (with paddles and PFDs) and you’ll pick those out during the race. The canoes do not have a center seat. Note that if you decide to use the provided paddles you must use the type provided with your boat (single-blade for canoes or double-blade for kayak). You are welcome to bring your personal kayak paddles to use in a rental canoe if you wish. This will be a mini-Transition Area, so stage whatever you’d like in the designated area.

Note the mandatory gear requirements. You’ll need to have both of these in place before putting in. It is VERY likely you’ll be paddling after dark.
– Racers must have 1 glow stick attached to the PFD and 2 glow sticks attached to the boat (bow & stern).
– Whistle must be easily accessible
– ProTip: bring a short length of paracord (20′) to secure your boat. They’ll be several options to drop you boat along the course and proceed on foot. Bummer if it floats away.

If you haven’t raced with us before, we like presenting you with something you CANNOT get in everyday life. Part of this sport is genuinely fun – part of this is truly challenging. We try to strike a good balance. This is one of those races – we think you’ll love it.

Thanks again for Committing to Adventure, and we’ll see you at the race!
