race day logistics
Bikes, boats, gear - it’s all here.
We try to remove as much of the stress as possible. We’ll have signage and staff to assist you.
Check all the info below - it’ll help you tremendously.
-
We can't encourage you enough: go to this clinic.
Mark Lattanzi of TanZ Navigation has raced all over the world, navigated through multi-day expeditions, and literally wrote the book on the subject - Squiggly Lines. Whether you're new to navigation or have been doing this for years, you're going to learn something.
Mark will also have a few Moscow Compasses available for purchase. They're top-notch and widely trusted in adventure racing.
Don't miss the opportunity to learn from one of the best.
-
There’s no designated racer parking. Park wherever you find an available spot around the lodge/event area.
-
The primary Transition Area (TA) is at Mary Breckinridge Memorial Park. This is where you’ll stage your bikes pre-race.
Map Link: Mary Breckinridge Memorial Park
There are restrooms available, but we’d advise staging your own water.
You’ll stage your bikes/helmets/shoes before the start. You may stage whatever else you’d like with your bike, but keep it tidy+contained. Staff will be there to assist and watch your gear.
+ We highly recommend saving offline maps using Google or printing old-school directions. You’ll lose reception around the TA.
+ It’s just a few turns (10min from Hal Rogers Parkway). If you’re coming in that way, just drop your bike on the way to Buckhorn.
+ It’s about a 35min drive from the Bike TA to Buckhorn. Plan accordingly.
+ You’ll need to pick up your bike/gear from this TA by noon on Sunday. This is when our volunteers will leave the TA.
+ For planning purposes, expect to see this TA within the first 3hrs and last 3hrs of the race.
+ Safety: Red rear blinky lights must be on at all times while biking. Helmets must be worn at all times. Each racer must also have reflective material visible from the rear (reflective vest, clothing, pack, or similar). -
If you’re using a rental boat, please sign this waiver from Canoe Kentucky now.
Boat staging is near the beach/swim area near the S/F at Buckhorn. Look for signage.
You’ll be starting with a Paddle Leg, so get your boats ready to race (seats, glowsticks, PFDs, calories, water, etc.)If you're using RENTALS: Pick one out and get it staged along with your gear. Note that if you decide to use the provided paddles you must use the type provided with your boat (single-blade for canoes or double-blade for kayak). You are welcome to bring your personal paddles/PFDs to use in a rental.
Post Race: Pick up all your paddle gear by noon.
PFDs must be on and buckled at all times when on the water!
Glowsticks must be activated when on the water. Racers must have 1 glow stick attached to the PFD and 2 glow sticks attached to the boat (bow & stern)You will not be required to carry any of your paddle gear outside of the Paddle Leg.

The maps are pre-plotted (meaning the checkpoints are already printed on the maps).
Maps are 1:24,000 scale. There are four 11×17 sheets. Contour intervals are 40’,
Race Instructions / Cluesheets are 8.5×11.Everything is printed on waterproof paper.
You’ll get these during check-in at 7:30pm. -
Post Race Meal: you’ll receive a meal ticket in your check-in bag. Don’t lose it. It’ll get you breakfast at the onsite Bowlingtown Country restaurant at the Park.
Awards: Trophies are ok, we steer practical. First place in each division will get a 361°/Night nalgene. -
You’ll be traveling through remote, populated hollers where loose dogs are part of riding in Eastern Kentucky - think of them a little like bears out West: be aware and be prepared.
We’ve done plenty of outreach to make sure residents know you’re coming, including talking to residents, posting in county/community groups, coordinating with the Sheriff’s Office and Animal Control, and pre-riding the route.
Still, we strongly recommend carrying a dog deterrent such as pepper spray and/or an ultrasonic deterrent. Staying calm, not escalating a chase, and firm words have resolved all occurrences I've had out here.
Our hill people are as freindly as they come, and The WarDaddy and WarBird races have used these roads for years without incident - let's keep that streak going.
