The Dawkins Rail Run

The Dawkins Line Rail Trail is a newly opened rail-to-trail path in Eastern Kentucky. The wide gravel lane passes through the peaceful rural landscape, over several trestles, and through the Gun Creek Tunnel. The trail is closed to motor vehicles, which makes it ideal for a running race. Both road and trail enthusiasts will find the packed, crushed-stone surface agreeable.

Due to severe flooding in the area, parts of the Dawkins Trail were severely damaged. The 2014 race had to be cancelled. The race was tentatively scheduled for October 2015, but unfortunately the trail is still closed at mile 11.4 due to a mudslide. We know many runners try to plan their events and training a few months in advance so at this time we are going to cancel the 2015 race. At some point we hope to bring a great race to Eastern KY. Please keep an eye on our events in the future.

The last 6.2 miles will be a 3.1 mile out and back towards the Hager Hill end of the trail. The total elevation gain is 974 feet. The Marathon course passes over quite a few wooden trestles and features the 662 foot long Gun Creek Tunnel. Aid stations, drinks and carbs, will be available at approximately 2-3 mile intervals dictated by the limited road access to the course. Depending on the weather you may want to consider carrying a water bottle or small hydration pack between aid stations.

Out of respect for the hard working volunteers out there on the course we ask that all racers consider withdrawing from the Marathon if he or she is not at the 20 mile marker by 7 hours (3pm).

Half Marathon — This 13.1 mile course will take runners just past the Gun Creek Tunnel before they turn back towards the finish line. The aid Stations, drinks and carbs, will be the same as the 26.2 mile course, at approximately 2-3 mile intervals dictated by the limited road access to the course. Depending on the weather you may want to consider carrying a water bottle or small hydration pack between aid stations.

10k — The 10k course crosses five wooden trestles before the turn around point located at the 3.1 mile aid station.
