gear

BIKES: (Saturday, 6:00am – 7:30am): Location – Shelter #1 (directly across from Breaks Park Conference Room). You’ll see our banner.

You may leave anything you’d like at this TA when you stage them, however you must take everything with you when you finally leave on your bikes.  For planning purposes, you’ll be seeing this TA a few times on Saturday – morning and afternoon. There’s water at this location.

PERSONAL PADDLE GEAR:

  • If you’re just using YOUR OWN PFDs/Paddles/Seats (but rented a boat): Stage them in the designated area at Shelter#1 and we’ll transport them to the paddle TA for you (don’t stage anything else with your paddle gear (no water, food, clothes, etc.). We recommend you group and secure your team’s paddle gear together. We’ll bring your paddle gear back to the FINISH at the end of the race.

PERSONAL BOATS / PADDLE GEAR: (Saturday, 6:00am – 7:30am): Location – Flannagan Reservoir Spillway Boat Ramp. This is about 30 minutes from the PARK and 15 minutes from the START, so plan accordingly. Map Location: LINK.

  • If you’re using YOUR OWN Boat: Stage them in the designated area along with your PFDs/Paddles/Seats only. Don’t stage anything else with your boats (no water, food, clothes, etc.). You’ll pick up your boats & paddle gear after the race by 10AM.
  • If you’re just using YOUR OWN PFDs/Paddles/Seats (but rented a boat): Stage them at Shelter#1 (see above).
  • If you’re using RENTALS: It will already be staged for you (with paddles and PFDs) and you’ll pick those out during the race. The canoes do not have a center seat. Note that if you decide to use the provided paddles you must use the type provided with your boat (single-blade for canoes or double-blade for kayak). You are welcome to bring your personal kayak paddles to use in a rental canoe if you wish.

The paddle will be on flat-water and likely in the dark. NO (potable) water is available at this location.

WATER: Except as noted above for the Bike Staging location, there’s no official water-stations as part of this course. However, you’ll have access to a few public water sources throughout the course and numerous options to treat.

maps

MAPS: Directly following the PreRace meeting on Friday, each team/solo will receive one set of maps, which will include: a set of three 1:24,000 scale waterproof (11×17), a waterproof Race Instruction sheet, and additional supplemental info and UTM/Clue sheets printed on non-waterproof paper.

If you need a refresher on how to plot UTM coordinates on your race map, check out this BLOG Article.

Meals: Thanks to Haysi Partners, they’ll be cooking you up a nice well-earned breakfast at the FINISH. For the pre-race eats, you can visit Break’s Park’s Rhododendron Restaurant for their delicious southern cooking. The Park won’t be open early enough for breakfast Saturday morning, but there’s a fancy gas station (Valero on the left) as you go into Haysi – they have legit breakfast biscuits, coffee, budlight, etc.

$2: Bring $2 per vehicle for entry into the Park.
