Adventure Clinic

We’re hosting a major Clinic on ADVENTURE!

Presented by Kentucky State Parks

Geared toward anyone interested in getting outside MORE, we’re bringing together race directors, athletes, small businesses and presenters throughout the region.

Look for a host of topics on outdoorsy pursuits along with how to get started with our favorite sport, Adventure Racing.

This will be in conjunction with the FRIGID race the following day – so get schooled on Saturday and join us for a little racing on Sunday! Sign up for both the CLINIC and FRIGID and save $10.

We’re excited to have Gerry Seavo James, from the Explore Kentucky Initiative, as the keynote speaker! Let’s see more and DO more in 2019. We couldn’t have a better presenter to get us outside and motivated for the upcoming year.
Presented By: The Explore Kentucky Initiative

If you’re new to AR or want to try your first race this year, then DON’T MISS THIS! Local Race Director Brian Holzhausen will  cover everything to get you started and hopefully addicted to the best sport in the world.

Presented By: DINO

You’ll learn some invaluable ways to save your race (or your day) when you accidentally bust your bike. Experienced bike mechanic, Mike Hale, will be demonstrating how to get rolling again after flats, broken derailleurs, popped spokes, snapped chains and more.

Presented By: Mike’s Hike & Bike

Pain sucks. Leg cramps, foot & calf problems, shoulder issues, sciatic pain from paddling… it’s pretty common to get hurt in our outdoor sports. Join Tiffany Hutchens from Move Better Orthopedic Massage (and Team No Sleep) as she covers how to treat chronic injuries from training as well as ways to keep pain at bay during a race. She’ll demonstrate a variety of techniques from foam rolling, using kinesio-tape, the importance of bike fitting/alignment, and self massage tools.

Presented By: Move Better Orthopedic Massage

Like riding a bike? Like backpacking? You’ll love bikepacking then. Race Directors and bikepacking converts (from Athena Adventures and 361° Adventures) will go over the basics on how to get started, where to ride, and the resources for covering more miles on your bike. This opens up a whole new world of adventuring!

Presented By: Oveja Negra, who’s gear is designed, tested, and sewn by actual cyclist – right here in the U.S. They’ll be giving away a couple of their high quality bags at this session!

Your shoulders probably hurt for a reason. This clinic will focus on techniques for improving your efficiency and endurance on the water. Taught by ACA Certified Instructor, Gerry James, bring a paddle (if you have one) and learn the motions.

Presented By: Aqua~Bound – Probably THE most used paddle in Adventure Racing, we’ll be giving away a Sting Ray 4-piece paddle!

Map & Compass skills aren’t just important to Adventure Racing. Stay safe and plan the best backcountry trips by learning a few essential skills on map reading.  Bring a compass & headlamp for the Night Hike & Nav Activity afterwards.

Presented By: The Chickpoints

If you’re limiting your adventures to the daylight you’re missing out on half the fun. This session is being taught by the experienced No Sleep Adventures Team! Learn to find your way when the sun goes down and get comfortable with being in the dark. Then, join them for the Night Hike & Nav Activity to test what you’ve learned directly following this session!

Presented By: Noxgear

Let’s run… really far! Think you don’t have what it takes to tackle an ultra distance race, or even a marathon? You may be pretty wrong. Michael Whisman, a Race Director from Next Opportunity Events, will explore what they’ve seen correlate with success and how you can take the first steps (see what we did there) toward running long.

Presented By: Next Opportunity Events

Consider this a Top 5 primer on what you can do to immediately improve your mountain biking game! Meagan Shetler, a certified coach from KyMBA, will be discussing and demonstrating (as much as a “classroom” will allow), key skills to boost your riding. She’ll also be highlighting some of the top local trails in our area!

Presented By: Kentucky Mountain Bike Association

Map, compass, woods and fun are the backbone of “The Thinking Sport”. Jim Benton, from Orienteering Cincinnati (OCIN), will get you started on the Why and How of getting involved in this family friendly sport.

Presented By: Orienteering Cincinnati (OCIN)

Have a question – raise your hand. Adventure Racers have an absolute

wealth of knowledge and we’ll have plenty around for this open format discussion. Ask away and we bet you’ll get some great answers on racing, gear, nutrition, training, tips, the best events, exploring, teamwork… the list goes on.

Presented By: The Adventure Racing Cooperative (ARC)

Blurry bikes, washed out ski photos and dark sunsets are all really cool, but a few techniques will go a long way toward capturing those outdoor memories. Get some tips and tricks that you can apply from your iPhone to your fancy DSLR.

Presented By: The Kentucky Waterman Series

When things go really south, what does it take to simply NOT QUIT? This one is a case study with our fun-loving teammate Matt Mitchell. He’ll walk you through the emotions, lows and the rewards of not throwing in the towel.

Presented By: Matt Mitchell @UplandBrewingCo

All sessions, lodging and food will be hosted at General Butler State Park
